The Waste Not Want Not food share is one of The Vinery’s popular initiatives. It simultaneously tackles food poverty, food waste and social isolation by redistributing surplus, good-quality food generously donated by local supermarkets including Aldi, Co-op and others. The service is provided in a safe and non-judgemental environment, ensuring that everyone feels welcome and respected.

Key impact:

• Runs several times each week -Monday, Wednesday and Friday 12noon - 1.30pm

• Provides free access to fresh produce, groceries and meals for anyone in the community

• Diverts significant amounts of edible food from landfill, supporting environmental sustainability

• Complements the community garden by incorporating surplus home-grown produce

• Directly addresses rural disadvantage and the cost-of-living crisis in Banff, Macduff and surrounding areas. 

This initiative has become a lifeline for many local families and individuals, while reinforcing The Vinery’s role as a hub for practical support, community care and environmental responsibility.

The Vinery’s community gardens are thriving thanks to a dedicated team of volunteers who give their time, energy and care week after week. Together they grow a wide range of fresh vegetables, herbs and fruit that are shared with the community through lunchtime meals, the Waste Not Want Not food share, and direct distribution.

Their work makes a real difference. The gardens not only provide nutritious, locally grown produce, but also create a welcoming outdoor space where people can learn new skills, improve their wellbeing, connect with others, and take pride in contributing to something positive for Banff, Macduff and surrounding areas.

The commitment and skill of these volunteers are central to The Vinery’s success and demonstrate the strength of community ownership that is now shaping the future of the project.

Friends of the Vinery Community Garden

This year has seen the formation of Friends of the Vinery Community Garden. Meeting monthly, the group have shaped this year's growing season, and the produce has been such an incredible display. Community led, community based and with community right at the heart of the Vinery, growing has been at the heart of the Vinery. 22 community plots are all fully occupied with plots tendered to by groups from Banff Academy, the Library, Nursery, individuals and volunteers. 

Every Monday and Wednesday we open our doors and invite the community to join us for a freshly prepared lunch and a chance to connect with others.

Using seasonal produce grown in our own gardens, we create simple, wholesome meals that are made to be shared. It’s a warm, welcoming space where people can enjoy good food, good company, and a break from the everyday.

Whether you come regularly or just drop in when you can, you’ll always find a friendly welcome and a seat at the table.
